What Is the Connection Between Stomach Pain and Mental Health?

Between 1990 and 2013, the number of people with anxiety disorders or depression has increased by 50% worldwide. In other words, this means that perhaps 615 million people today suffer from one of these conditions.

Arthur Kleinman is a professor of Medical Anthropology and Psychiatry at Harvard University. He is an expert in mental health. Kleinman has conducted several studies related to social suffering and mental health.

Mental health is a huge public health problem. This is what the WHO stated.

“The estimated cost of large-scale treatment, especially psychosocial counseling and antidepressant medication, was USD 147 billion.” 

However, mention has also been made of the fact that the benefits far outweigh the costs.

In this sense, the WHO also assures that it is essential that we expand mental health services on a global level. As a result, we will then be able to take care of the well-being of the entire population and at different socio-economic levels.

The WHO also clarifies that the Sustainable Development Goals approved by the United Nations General Assembly propose to reduce premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by a third by 2030. The plan is to achieve this by promoting the prevention and treatment of mental illness.
